For the two of you
Disney Anniversary Gifts, From the Up Kind to the Kind Only the Two of You Would Understand

Search for Disney anniversary gifts, or for Up anniversary gifts, which is what a lot of couples actually type, and the first page is a wall of objects: balloon house prints, mailboxes with two names on them, replicas of the scrapbook from the film. Some of them are lovely. None of them says why Up, of all the films Disney and Pixar have made, is the one couples reach for when an anniversary comes around.
The reason is the opening. In about four and a half minutes, without a line of dialogue, it tells the story of one marriage from the wedding to the end. It is less a love story than a record of a life together, the ordinary days included, which is exactly what an anniversary is for.
Below are the gifts that follow from that, by kind, by year and by person, with the dates and a table at the end. One of them is something we make, a storybook with the two of you drawn in, and we will say plainly where it fits and where something else is better.
Why the opening of Up makes couples cry
Up came out in 2009, directed at Pixar by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson, and its official synopsis is all balloons: an old man ties thousands of them to his house and flies to South America. Couples remember the opening. Two children who share a dream of adventure grow up, marry and fix up the old house where they met. They work at the zoo, picnic under the clouds, ready a nursery for a baby who never comes, and save for the big trip in a jar the years keep emptying. By the time he buys the tickets, she is too ill to go.
It was built to feel like a family's home movies. Docter has said he and Peterson first wrote it with snippets of dialogue, then took the talking out, remembering the silent films his parents shot when he was growing up, where the only sound was the projector. What was left is Michael Giacchino's score, which won the Oscar, and a marriage told the way families keep their memories: in pieces, mostly on ordinary days.
Then comes the part that makes the sequence land. Ellie has kept a scrapbook of adventures since she was a girl, with pages left blank. Late in the film, Carl finally looks through it and finds she filled them after all, with photographs of their married life. The adventure was the ordinary days, and she had been keeping the record all along.
The other love stories couples name
Up is rarely the only film couples name. Three others come up again and again, and each has a moment that works as a gift idea, because each is about attention rather than magic.
| Film | The moment couples mean | The gift it points to |
|---|---|---|
| Up (2009) | A marriage in a few minutes, and a scrapbook whose blank pages turn out to be full | A record of your own years together, kept as you go |
| Beauty and the Beast (1991) | The Beast giving Belle a library, because she is always reading | Proof that you noticed what they already love |
| Tangled (2010) | The floating lights she has watched from a window every birthday, seen at last from a boat | Taking them to the thing they have always wanted to see |
| Lady and the Tramp (1955) | A spaghetti dinner by moonlight at Tony's | Your own first dinner, done again on purpose |
The library is the one worth studying. Glen Keane, who supervised the animation of the Beast, has said the whole film turned on that moment. The Beast does not give her jewels or flowers: he gives her the thing she already loves, on a scale she could never have managed herself.
Beauty and the Beast and Up are also, in that order, the first two animated films nominated for the best picture Oscar, and both care less about falling in love than about what two people do for each other afterward. That is the part an anniversary celebrates.
What actually works: four kinds of anniversary gift
Strip away the themes and the gifts that last come in four shapes. None of them depends on how much you spend.
- Your own adventure book. A record of the two of you, started this year and added to every anniversary after.
- A scene from your own story, recreated. Your first dinner, your first trip, the place it started, done again on purpose.
- A day at the parks, on the date. If Disney is your place, the anniversary spent there, planned so the other person does not have to.
- A keepsake of the two of you. Something that shows the two of you as you are now, and gains value every year it survives.
The themed objects on the first page of search results make good extras on top of one of these, and weak gifts on their own.
We make one of these, the fourth, and we will be specific about when it is the wrong choice. If you would rather see it first, look at the two of you drawn, free, from one photo.
Your own adventure book, started this year
The gift the film suggests most directly is the book, and most people buy only half of it. Replicas of the scrapbook are easy to find and make a good container; what mattered in the film was what went inside.
- Start with ordinary days, not the wedding, which already has an album. The first pages are this year: the apartment, the dinner party that went wrong, the Sunday walk, with photos, ticket stubs and one line of handwriting under each.
- Leave most of it empty, on purpose. The blank pages are the point. Write the year at the top of the next few and hand the book over with the rest unwritten.
- Add a page every anniversary, together, on the day. It takes twenty minutes and it becomes the tradition. By the tenth year the book is the gift, and nobody had to buy it.
- Keep one page for the list of things you have said you will do one day, and cross them off. In the film the big trip waits in a jar for most of a marriage.
The one way this fails is the perfect scrapbook: stickers, washi tape, an evening of crafting per page. It turns a record into a project, and projects stop. Tape the photo in, write the date, close the book.
Recreate a scene from your own story, not the film's
Recreating a film scene is a lovely idea that tends to come out as a costume. The version that works borrows the shape of the scene and fills it with your own story.
- The spaghetti dinner, as your first date. The dinner at Tony's matters because it is where the two of them start, not because of the pasta. Go back to where you had your first date, or cook what you ate that night.
- The library, as proof you noticed. Give the thing they already love at a scale they would never allow themselves: every book by the author they reread, the good version of what they have made do with for years.
- The lanterns, as the thing they have always wanted to see. The night works because she finally sees, up close, the lights she has watched from afar every year. Your version is the place they have mentioned for years, booked. Leave real sky lanterns in the film: the National Park Service strongly discourages them because of the fire risk, and many places ban them.
- The trip, before the jar gets raided. If Up has one practical lesson for couples, it is about the trip that keeps getting postponed. Book it, even a small one, and put the confirmation in the card.
What these have in common is that the other person recognizes the scene before you explain it. If you have to say which film it comes from, it has turned back into a theme.
A day at the parks, on the date itself
For many couples, Disney is a place as much as a film: where they got engaged, honeymooned, or go every year. Spending the anniversary there is a gift in itself, and a few details decide whether it feels like an anniversary or a vacation.
- The free button. Walt Disney World's help pages send birthday guests to Guest Relations or a resort front desk for a complimentary button, and an independent panelist on planDisney, Disney's planning site, wrote in July 2025 that Happy Anniversary ones are free too, at Guest Relations or in the park shops. At Disneyland, ask at City Hall on Main Street, U.S.A. A button is a greeting, not a perk: people may congratulate you, and nothing more is promised.
- The dinner that matches the film. At Magic Kingdom, Tony's Town Square Restaurant on Main Street, U.S.A. is themed to Lady and the Tramp and serves spaghetti and meatballs, and Be Our Guest Restaurant sits at the foot of the Beast's castle in Fantasyland, with a grand ballroom among its dining rooms. Walt Disney World opens dining reservations 60 days ahead; the same panelist suggests noting the anniversary on each table-service booking.
- The surprise in the room. Disney's floral and gift service delivers anniversary flowers and gifts to Walt Disney World resort hotels, the same day if you order by noon Eastern Time. It waits at the front desk until one of you is in the room.
- Something to open that morning. A letter, or the adventure book with its first page done. A storybook of the two of you works too: order it about three weeks before you fly so it is home in time to pack, and see how the two of you come out drawn before deciding anything.
One honest note: an anniversary spent sprinting between rides is a vacation with a date on it. Plan one slow thing, a long dinner or an hour on a bench at dusk, and protect it.
A keepsake of the two of you
This group gains value every year, because the two of you, as you are at this anniversary, will not come around again.
- A photo book of the year, if you want your actual year, trip by trip. Choosing the photos is the step that slips.
- A drawn portrait of the two of you, commissioned from an artist a month ahead. It goes on a wall and never gets thrown away.
- A storybook with both of you drawn in. The one we make, with its limits spelled out below.
Ours is called Us, Ever After. You send one photo of the two of you, we draw you both as characters in the look of a modern 3D animated film, and those two faces are on all thirteen spreads of a story made of ordinary days: the kiss in the middle of a busy street, dancing in the kitchen at half past eleven with no music, flowers with the price still on them, the night with a door in it and the two coffees afterward. A real artist checks every book before it prints.
What it is not: an Up book, or a Disney or Pixar product. There is nothing from any film in it, and we are not connected to either company. It is not your own story either: the scenes are ours, the same for every couple who picks this title. What is yours is your two faces, your names in the words, and the last page, where you write the dedication and we print it word for word. Put your own record there: the date you met, the first apartment, the line only you two understand. If you want your actual years, the adventure book is the better gift. If you want the two of you, recognizably, in a story you will reread every anniversary, this is the one.
If your Disney is the parks rather than the films, The Day We Were Kids Again puts you both in a day at a theme park we invented, and our other books for couples are on the shelf for the two of you.
Disney anniversary gift ideas by year
On the Emily Post Institute's list of traditional materials, the first anniversary is paper, the fifth wood, the tenth tin or aluminum and the twenty-fifth silver. Use the material as an excuse, and let the story of the marriage lead.
The first anniversary: paper. The adventure book is literally paper: start it with this first year, and tuck a letter about the year inside the cover. There is a whole guide to paper anniversary gifts, and if the wedding had a Disney thread, the ideas in Disney wedding gifts carry over almost unchanged.
The fifth: wood. A wooden box made to hold five years of the adventure book, the tickets and the letters. Or a wooden map of everywhere you have been together, with room left for the next five.
The tenth: tin or aluminum. Ten years is when the trip you keep saving for should stop waiting. Put the confirmation in a small tin, with the dates written on the lid. It is the lesson of the jar in Up, taken seriously.
The twenty-fifth: silver. A keepsake of the whole marriage: the adventure book reread together, a portrait, a trip back to where it started, or a personalized love story book of the two of them with a dedication naming the twenty-five years.
Disney anniversary gifts for her
Most of this page works in both directions, and gift guides split by gender usually end up split by hobby. What changes is the person, so start from her.
- If she plans every trip, the gift is a trip she did not have to plan. Book the dinner, the hotel and the sitter, and give her a day with nothing in it to organize.
- If she is the one who cries at the start of Up, give her the adventure book with the first page already done, in your handwriting.
- If she keeps every ticket stub, she is already keeping the record. A proper box or album for what she has saved says you noticed.
- If she takes the photos, she is missing from them. Anything that puts her in the record lands harder than you expect: a printed photo of her, a drawing of the two of you.
The trap is themed jewelry that would suit any fan of the film. A charm about a movie is a gift about the movie. Engrave your date on it and it becomes a gift about you.
Disney anniversary gifts for him
Same principle, different blind spots.
- If he says he did not cry at the start of Up, he did. The adventure book, or a letter about one specific day, will get read twice, once while you are watching.
- If he is hard to buy for, he usually means nothing he has to look after. Give a plan with a date on it: the table at the place of your first date, booked.
- If he collects, add to the collection only with a piece that carries your date, or skip it. The hundredth pin is not an anniversary.
- If he rarely gets gifts about himself, give him evidence that you noticed him: the letter about this year, a framed photo of a day he loved.
If you swap gifts, agree on the size first: a weekend at the parks against a card stings more than any wrong gift. A storybook works in either direction, since you write and sign the dedication, and our anniversary gifts for couples work from any photo where both faces are clear.
For your parents' anniversary, from the kids
Plenty of people searching for anniversary gifts for Disney lovers are buying for their parents, a twenty-fifth or a fortieth, from children who grew up on the same films. The rules shift a little.
- Give them their own record. Parents rarely have one of the two of them. They took the photos, and the photos are of you. Scan the old prints, find the wedding picture, and put their story in an adventure book, with one page from each child.
- Give time, not things. Parents with decades of objects are short of evenings: book the table where they had their first date, and pay the check in advance.
- Recreate the photo. The wedding picture, retaken on the same steps and in the same pose, decades later. It costs nothing and tends to end up on the fridge.
- A storybook of the two of them. It needs one clear photo of your parents together, and the dedication is yours to write. The story is the ordinary days of a couple, not their own history, so put their history in the dedication.
If grandchildren want to give something of their own, our guide to personalized books for kids covers the books where the child is the one drawn in. For grown-ups who never stopped loving the films, there is Disney gifts for adults.
The dates that matter
An anniversary never moves, which makes it the easiest occasion to plan for and the easiest to leave too late.
- Sixty days out: the parks. Walt Disney World and Disneyland both open dining reservations 60 days ahead, and the tables worth having go early. Rooms and flights, earlier still.
- A month out: anything commissioned. A portrait, a custom map, an engraved box. Makers get busy, and a month is the comfortable margin.
- A few weeks out: our book. It is printed after you order, and the book page and the cart show the delivery dates before you pay. Check them against the date, and order earlier still before a trip.
- The night before: the letter. It is the one gift that cannot be late, and the one most often left out.
The preview does not need a date: you can see the two of you drawn tonight, in about thirty seconds for each face, with no account and no card, and decide in the morning.
If you are late anyway, give the letter on the day and say in it what is coming. A dated promise in an envelope is a gift. A present grabbed on the way home is an apology.
Every idea on one page, by anniversary
The ideas above, sorted by the year they suit best.
| Anniversary | Idea | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| First (paper) | An adventure book with the first page filled in | Starts the record the film is about |
| First (paper) | A letter about this year, in detail | Nobody else could have written it |
| Fifth (wood) | A wooden box for five years of pages, tickets and letters | Turns loose memories into a collection |
| Tenth (tin or aluminum) | The trip you keep saving for, booked, the dates on a tin | The lesson of the jar, taken seriously |
| Twenty-fifth (silver) | The wedding photo, retaken on the same steps | The same two people, twenty-five years on |
| Any year | Your first dinner, recreated | They recognize the scene before you explain it |
| Any year | A day at the parks, with one slow dinner booked | The place is already yours; the planning is the gift |
| Any year | A storybook with both of you drawn in | Reread every anniversary, your words on the last page |
If you only do one thing, start the book. Everything else on this list can go inside it.

Questions couples ask
What is a good Disney anniversary gift?
One that starts from the film the two of you love and fills it with your own story. The gifts couples keep are an adventure book of your own years, a favorite scene recreated as your first date, a day at the parks planned so the other person does not have to, or a keepsake of the two of you. Themed objects make good extras, but on their own they are about the film rather than about you.
What is an Up-themed anniversary gift?
Usually an object from the film: a balloon house print, a mailbox with two names on it, or a replica of the scrapbook Ellie keeps. The version that lands borrows the film's real idea, a record of a life together, and makes it yours: a scrapbook of your own ordinary days, started now, added to every anniversary, with blank pages left for what you have not done yet.
What is a Disney anniversary gift for my wife?
Start from her rather than from the catalog. If she plans every trip, give her one she did not have to plan. If she keeps every ticket stub, give them a proper home. If she takes the family photos, give her something that puts her in the record, such as a printed photo of her or a drawing of the two of you. Themed jewelry works best with your date engraved on it.
What is a Disney anniversary gift for my husband?
Something about the two of you rather than one more piece of a collection: a letter about one specific day, your first dinner recreated, a trip with the dates already booked, or a keepsake with both of you in it. If he insists he did not cry at the opening of Up, the adventure book is the gift he will read twice.
Can you celebrate an anniversary at Disney World?
Yes. Walt Disney World's own pages point birthday guests to Guest Relations or a resort front desk for a free button, and an independent planDisney panelist wrote in July 2025 that Happy Anniversary ones are free too, at Guest Relations or in the park gift shops. Dining reservations open 60 days ahead, the same panelist suggests noting the occasion on each one, and Disney delivers flowers or gifts to its resort hotels. None of it guarantees extras, so plan one slow evening yourselves.
What is a Disney gift for a first anniversary?
The first anniversary is traditionally paper, which suits the idea at the heart of Up: a scrapbook of your own, started with this first year and meant to be added to every anniversary after. Put a letter about the year inside the cover. A storybook with both of you drawn in is a paper gift too, and it comes back out every year.
What is a sentimental anniversary gift for a couple who has everything?
Their own record. Couples who have everything rarely have the story of the two of them in one place: a scrapbook of scanned photos with a page from each child, their wedding photo retaken on the same steps, a drawn portrait, or a storybook with both of them drawn in and a dedication naming the years. None of it takes up much room, and nobody else could have given it.
When should I order a personalized anniversary gift?
A few weeks before the date for most personalized gifts, and a month ahead for anything commissioned from an artist. Our storybook is printed after you order, and the book page and the cart show the delivery dates before you pay, so check them against the date. If you are celebrating at the parks, order about three weeks before you travel so it is home in time to pack.
