For the two of you
Christmas Gifts for a Pregnant Wife: What to Give at Each Stage of the Pregnancy

Search for christmas gifts for pregnant wife and you get forum threads, long roundups and shops. A list written for a pregnant wife has to be written for every pregnant wife at once, so it cannot ask the question that decides the gift: where will she be in the pregnancy on December 25?
Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, so the same Christmas can find one wife in her first trimester, tired and not yet telling anyone, and another at 36 weeks with a hospital bag by the door. Add what research on gift giving says, that recipients appreciate a gift they asked for more than givers expect, and the shopping gets simpler: ask, add your time, add one thing to keep.
Below: where Christmas falls in her pregnancy, a three-gift rule, ideas for each trimester, help at home, keepsakes, what to skip and the date that decides the rest. One idea is something we make, a storybook of the two of you, and we say plainly where it fits and where it does not. One of our titles is not for her at all, and we say which.
Where does Christmas fall in her pregnancy?
Count back from her due date. Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, counted from the first day of the last period, and Cleveland Clinic divides it into three trimesters of about 13 weeks. A due date up to mid March puts Christmas in her third trimester, mid March to early July in her second, and later than that in her first.
| Her due date is around | On Christmas Day she is about | Where that puts her, and what suits |
|---|---|---|
| Late December or January | 35 to 40 weeks | Third trimester, close to the birth. Keep plans close to home unless she says otherwise. |
| February | 31 to 35 weeks | Third trimester. Comfort, help, and a Christmas Day planned around her. |
| March | 26 to 31 weeks | Around the line between the second and third trimesters. Choose what she can use now and after the birth. |
| April or May | 18 to 26 weeks | Second trimester. A good window for an evening out, if she is up for it. |
| June | 13 to 17 weeks | Around the start of the second trimester. Ask what she feels like doing. |
| July or later | 13 weeks or fewer | First trimester. Fatigue is common, and some couples have not told anyone yet. |
These are rough counts, and her doctor or midwife has her due date. The table's lines come from Cleveland Clinic: the first trimester lasts until 13 weeks, the second covers weeks 13 to 28 and the third weeks 29 to 40. Each trimester is different, so let her tell you the rest.
What can I buy a pregnant woman for Christmas?
Buy what she asked for, then add your time and one thing to keep. Ask her to name one thing she wants, give one gift that costs you effort rather than money, and give one keepsake of this Christmas. The three-gift rule is our own and fits any stage; its first gift rests on research about how people receive gifts.
The research runs against instinct. In 2011 Francesca Gino and Francis Flynn reported five studies in which recipients appreciated gifts they had explicitly asked for more than gifts they had not, while givers expected the two kinds to be appreciated equally. Givers were also more willing to buy a gift when the recipient named one specific item rather than a list. In 2009 Flynn and Gabrielle Adams reported three studies on price: givers expected that spending more would make recipients feel more appreciative, and recipients reported no such link.
We read the abstracts, not the full papers, and they are about gifts in general, not about pregnancy or Christmas. Our reading, and only ours:
- Ask for one thing, not a list. "What is the one thing you would like this year?" is enough. If she says nothing, lean on the time and keepsake gifts below.
- Keep the surprise for what she cannot request. The words, the date on the card, the sentence on the last page of a book.
- Do not use price to say you care. Recipients in the 2009 studies saw no link between what a gift cost and how appreciated they felt.
If a keepsake with both of you in it appeals, see the two of you drawn for Christmas: it is free, and nothing is printed until you order.
Gifts for the third trimester: comfort, nesting and a quiet house
Best for the third trimester: comfort and fewer things to do. Cleveland Clinic lists aches and pains among what to expect in these last weeks, so the gifts that land are the ones she can use sitting down: something soft to lean on or wear, a meal she does not have to arrange, a chore taken away.
- Best for a wife who cannot get comfortable at night: a body pillow, if she has said she wants one. It is a comfort item, not a health product, so promise nothing about what it will fix. Ask first: she may already own one.
- Best for the hospital bag: a soft robe and slippers she picks or approves. Loose and stretchy beats fitted.
- Best for a wife who is done with errands: groceries or a meal delivery she does not have to arrange. She chooses the food, you set it up on your account before she has to ask.
- Best for a wife who is nesting: the nursery job she keeps mentioning, finished by you. Do it early: assembly in the week of the due date is a deadline, not a gift.
- Best for a wife who dreads the day itself: a Christmas planned around her. Where she sits, when the meal is, who does the dishes, and a room she can retreat to.
Nothing in that list is a health product, on purpose: for anything she would eat, take, apply to her skin or do for exercise, see the section on gifts to skip.
Gifts for the second trimester: something that is just hers
Best for the second trimester: a gift that treats her as herself, not as a mother in waiting. Cleveland Clinic notes that women who felt nauseous and tired early on often feel better in these weeks, so this can be the window for an evening out, a photo session or a piece of jewelry, if she is up for it.
- Best for a wife who misses her old routine: a night that is not about the baby. A dinner you reserve, tickets to something she loves, an evening with friends. In 2017 Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner reported experiments in which recipients rated experiential gifts as strengthening relationships more than material ones. It is about gifts in general, and we read only the abstract.
- Best for a wife who wants a picture of this time: a maternity photo session. Let her choose the date, and ask the photographer what timing works. If any part of the plan involves travel, ask her doctor or midwife first.
- Best for a wife who likes jewelry: a piece that marks the year, not the date. A due date is an estimate, so engrave the year, or wait until after the birth.
- Best for a wife who loves clothes: store credit she spends herself. A gift card is not a failure of imagination when she has told you what she wants.
- Best for a wife who wants to be looked after: a massage or spa voucher, to use only after she has checked with her doctor or midwife and chosen the treatment herself.
Christmas in the first trimester: what to give when nobody knows yet
Best for the first trimester: gifts that work whether or not anyone knows. Cleveland Clinic lists fatigue and morning sickness among first-trimester symptoms, so keep it low effort and low pressure: help, a quiet Christmas Day, and nothing pregnancy-themed wrapped where relatives can read it. Decide together who hears the news and when.
If the test turned positive in November or December, Christmas falls in the first trimester, a stage some couples keep to themselves. Our guide to Christmas pregnancy announcement ideas covers the calendar behind the habit of waiting.
- Best for an exhausted wife: a day with nothing in it. You take the cooking, the wrapping and the calls to relatives.
- Best for a wife who is not telling anyone yet: an ordinary-looking present. Put the real message in the card, for her eyes only.
- Best for a nervous wife: a promise to be there. Offer to come to the next appointment, if she wants you there, and write it on a card.
- Best for a wife who wants Christmas to feel the way it always has: the old tradition, kept. Our guide to Christmas traditions for couples has ways to choose one.
A keepsake works here because nothing in it has to say pregnant. Under the Mistletoe, described below, has no baby in it, so it can be opened at a table full of relatives. Start with the free drawing any night.
What can I gift to my pregnant wife?
Your time, in writing, with dates on it. A morning of sleep, a week of dinners, the grocery run until the due date, the nursery job finished: gifts she can redeem and you cannot forget. Put each on a card with a date, because a vague promise to help more is easy to forget and hard to redeem.
In our view, help at home is the most underrated gift in this guide. We have no study to cite for that, so weigh it accordingly.
- Best for the weeks before the due date: the errands. Every grocery run until the baby comes, with the first date filled in.
- Best for after the birth: dinners. Three or four, cooked or ordered from places she likes, with dates. Add one for the second month.
- Best for a wife who never gets to sleep in: a morning. A named Saturday, you up first, door closed.
- Best for a wife with an older child: a day with the older one. The child gets an outing, she gets a quiet house.
- Best for a wife who dreads the logistics: you own the list. The route to the hospital, the bag, who gets called and in what order.
Ask her to choose the dates, which keeps the gift in her hands.
Sentimental gifts for a pregnant wife
A sentimental gift for a pregnant wife keeps something about this particular Christmas: a letter about her, written now, a notebook for the baby that you start, a printed photo of the two of you from this year, or an ornament that marks it.
- Best for a wife who keeps things: a letter about her, not about the baby. What you have seen her do these months, and what you are sure of because of it.
- Best for a wife who likes ritual: an ornament that marks this year, the first of a series, with the year on the back.
- Best for a wife who will want to remember: a notebook for letters to the baby. You write the first page, she writes the second.
- Best for a wife who likes photographs: a printed picture of the two of you from this year, framed, with the date on the back.
- Best for a wife who loves a card: your own words in it. Our Christmas messages for wife has lines to borrow and a way to write your own.
The tests for what makes a gift sentimental are in our guide to sentimental Christmas gifts, and if it is also your first Christmas married, see first Christmas married gifts. And if the keepsake should be a book with both of you in it, see what the two of you look like drawn, free.
Is a storybook of the two of you a good gift for a pregnant wife?
Yes, if you want a keepsake of this Christmas as the two of you, before the baby arrives. Under the Mistletoe is a Christmas storybook that draws a man and a woman as characters, and Us, Ever After does the same for ordinary days. Neither is about the baby or a pregnancy, which is the honest limit.
Dreamtale Cartoons, a small studio that has drawn about ten thousand families since 2020, makes Under the Mistletoe, a personalized hardcover for two grown-ups: you send one photo with both of you in it, we draw you as characters in the look of a modern 3D animated film, and the same two faces are on all thirteen Christmas spreads, with your names in the words.
The scenes are small and specific: the tree that leans, chosen out of four hundred straight ones, the lights that come out of the box in one knot, and a glass star glued twice from the very first Christmas. The last spread looks ahead to the tree coming down in January and ends on one question: "Same again next year?"
The story is ours and the same for every couple, with nothing in it about a baby. Yours are the faces, the names and the last page, a dedication we print word for word. That page is where the gift becomes about now: write a line about this being the Christmas before the baby, or leave it empty and we print ours, "for every Christmas so far, and every one still to come."
Us, Ever After is the same idea without Christmas: thirteen spreads of what the two of you actually do, the kitchen dance with no music, the two cups every morning. It suits a wife for whom Christmas is not the point, and it fits any day of the year.
Where it is the wrong gift.
- It is not about the baby. No baby is in either book.
- It does not show her pregnancy. The scenes are the same for every couple and none is about a pregnancy, so do not count on a bump in the drawings. If you want the bump in the picture, a maternity photo session is the better gift. For the book, one photo of the two of you is enough if each face is reasonably clear and roughly facing the camera.
- You are drawn as a man and a woman, so it fits a husband and wife and not every couple.
- It is not your own memories. Those go in the dedication.
- It is a keepsake, not a practical gift. Pair it with time and help, because a book does not carry the groceries.
One more title, so you do not buy the wrong one. And Then There Were Three is written from her to him, the day she finds out. It is her announcement to him, so it is not the gift a husband gives his pregnant wife. If you are the wife reading this and he does not know yet, start with our guide to ways to tell your husband you're pregnant.
Every book is printed after you order it, in the United States, and a real artist checks it first. The free preview takes about half a minute for each face, with no card and no account, and the cart shows the real delivery dates before you pay. For Christmas, order by December 1. More couple gifts are in Christmas gifts for couples.
What do you get your wife for Christmas when she has everything?
Stop looking for an object. Give her something that gets used up, a day planned for her, or a record of this year: a dinner out, a morning of sleep with a date on it, a letter, or a storybook of the two of you. In pregnancy, help at home can count for as much as any object.
The full answer, for any wife and any year, is in our guide to gifts for a wife who has everything.
- Best for a wife whose nursery is already full: a gift for her, not for the registry.
- Best for a wife who says she wants nothing: the dated morning and the letter. Nothing to store, nothing to assemble.
- Best for a wife who loves to be surprised: surprise her with the plan, not the object. A dinner that is reserved, a sitter arranged, a kitchen left spotless.
What to buy a pregnant woman for Christmas if you are not her husband
Give to her, not to the baby, and keep it light. The baby's list belongs to the parents; the gift for her is yours to choose: something to eat or enjoy that she has told you she likes, a handwritten card, or an offer of help with a date on it. If you are unsure, ask her partner.
| Best for | Give | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| A sister or close friend | A dinner with you doing the dishes, or a day of help with a date on it | Advice she did not ask for |
| A daughter or daughter-in-law | A meal for the freezer and a letter about how proud you are | Comments on her body or her plans |
| A coworker | A card everyone signs, a gift card for a place she likes | Anything personal about the pregnancy |
| A friend with an older child | A book for the older child about the baby coming | Anything for the baby the parents have already chosen |
For that last row, start with our guide to books for a new big brother or sister. The older child's own gift for her is in Christmas gifts for mom from kids.
Christmas gifts for a pregnant wife to skip
Skip anything that makes a health claim, jokes about her body, or is really a gift for the baby. Supplements, oils, teas and exercise gear are for her and her doctor or midwife to decide. A gift that could go to any pregnant woman is a theme, not a gift.
- Anything she would eat, take or put on her skin, unless she asked. What suits her is a question for her doctor or midwife, not a gift shop.
- A joke at her body's expense. The mug about her size, the card about cravings.
- The baby's gift with her name on the tag. A diaper bag labeled Mama. Sweet, and still about the baby.
- Anything that takes a lot of her energy. A trip, a class, an outing she has to organize. If she wants it, the gift is the arranging, done by you.
The pattern is the same as in our guide to gifts for a dad to be: if a gift could go to anyone expecting, it is a theme; if it only makes sense for her, it is a gift. If you only give one thing, write the letter tonight, or look at the two of you on the page first, free, and decide tomorrow.
When to buy, and the date that decides the rest
Buy anything made to order first, and the rest in December. Anything personalized is printed after you order it, so what counts is production plus shipping. For our books the date is December 1 in the United States, and the book page and the cart show the real delivery dates before you pay.
- Before December 1: a storybook, a portrait, an engraved piece. Check every seller's last date.
- By early December: anything with a reservation or an appointment in it, such as a dinner or a photo session. Ask her to choose the day.
- For the birth: a push present, a gift a partner gives the mother to mark the birth of the baby, before or after it, is a separate gift for a separate day. Christmas does not have to be it.
If you miss December 1 with a book, put a card under the tree that promises it, and give the book itself in January. When the baby is old enough for stories of their own, our guide to personalized books for kids explains what to look for.

Questions couples ask
What can I buy a pregnant woman for Christmas?
Something for her, not the baby: a thing she asked for, such as a soft robe or store credit she spends herself, plus time, like dinners delivered or a morning of sleep with a date on it, plus one keepsake of the year. If you are not her partner, a handwritten card and food she has named beat anything with a pregnancy slogan on it. Check anything health-related with her and her doctor or midwife.
What can I gift to my pregnant wife?
Ask her for one specific thing she wants, then add a gift of your time with dates on it and one keepsake of this Christmas, such as a letter, a framed photo of the two of you or a storybook. In five studies reported in 2011, Francesca Gino and Francis Flynn found that people appreciate gifts they asked for more than ones they did not, while givers expect both kinds to be appreciated equally.
What to get your wife for Christmas when she has everything?
Skip objects. Give something that gets used up, a day planned around her, or a record of this year: a dinner you book, a morning of sleep with a date on it, a letter, or a storybook of the two of you. Our full guide for a wife who has everything goes through more. In pregnancy, help at home can count as much as any object.
Should I surprise my pregnant wife or ask what she wants?
Ask for one thing and surprise her with the rest. In five studies reported by Gino and Flynn in 2011, recipients appreciated gifts they had explicitly requested more than ones they had not, and givers did not expect that. Put the surprise where she cannot request it: your words, a plan with a date, the last page of a book.
Is it okay to give a pregnancy gift before we tell anyone?
Yes, if it works as an ordinary present. Keep anything that says baby or pregnant until the two of you decide who hears the news, and put the real message in a card for her alone. A Christmas storybook of the two of you, which has no baby in it, can be opened at a table full of relatives. Our guide to Christmas pregnancy announcement ideas covers the order of telling.
Is a personalized storybook a good Christmas gift for a pregnant wife?
It can be, with limits. Under the Mistletoe draws the two of you from one photo on thirteen Christmas spreads, with your names in the words and your own dedication on the last page. The story is ours and the same for every couple, and none of it is about a baby or a pregnancy. It is a keepsake, so pair it with time and help. Order by December 1.
What should you not give a pregnant woman for Christmas?
Anything that makes a health claim or that she would eat, take or put on her skin without asking, a joke about her body, and a gift for the baby with her name on the tag. Ask her doctor or midwife about anything health-related, such as supplements, oils, a massage or exercise gear, and let her decide.
What is a push present, and is it the same as a Christmas gift?
A push present is a gift a partner gives the mother to mark the birth of the baby, and it can come before or after the birth. It is a separate gift for a separate occasion, so Christmas does not have to be it. If the baby is due soon after Christmas, spend Christmas on comfort and help, and keep the bigger gesture for the birth.
What are good last-minute Christmas gifts for a pregnant wife?
A letter, because it needs only paper and an evening. Others that fit in a few days: a card promising a morning of sleep with the date on it, a printed photo of the two of you, a meal delivery set up on your account, or a gift card for a store she likes. Anything made to order, including our books, needs lead time: order by December 1.
